Too few pilots – Swiss must remove 1400 flights in the summer

Date:

The Swiss AUA sister Swiss will meet 1400 flights in the summer from the program. The reason for the measure is a lack of pilots. According to the airline, this is due to a number of unexpected developments and optimistic application planning.

Both long-distance connections-for example to Chicago, where the offer is halved in September and October, are affected, as well as different flights in the short and medium-sized route network. A Swiss spokeswoman confirmed the relevant information of the “Aerotelegraph” specialist magazine on request. In general, the removal volume corresponds to 1.5 percent of the flight plan between April and October.

Numerous abbreviations in the long term
According to the report, the bottlenecks in the cockpit staff are the result of an unusually high number of long -term power, including pregnancies and accidents. The continuous retraining of crews on the new Airbus A350 also binds capacities. In addition, a new total employment contract with improved working time regulations has increased the need for staff by around 70 full time positions.

There are extra challenges in the fleet, such as Oliver Buchhofer, Chief Operating Officer, explained the “Aerotelegraph”. Aircraft are missing in the A220 machines due to engine problems, while there are enough aircraft with the A320 but too little crew. External help-such as a so-called wet lease partners or support from Lufthansa-Has has already been used, says Buchhofer.

Some pilots are moving pension
Until short -term lighting, some older pilots postpone their pension, the part -time troops are temporarily confiscating. In the long term, Swiss is planning to expand the training capacity in the cockpit and to take over to 110 new pilots every year.
