Ahead of Prime Day: – Union calls on Amazon workers to strike

Date:

In anticipation of Amazon’s annual “Prime Day” sales campaign, the German services union Verdi has called for a strike at seven distribution centers. Actions must also be taken at other stations with the start of the night shift from Sunday to Monday, Verdi announced on Sunday.

The union demands that Amazon recognize the collective agreements in the retail sector and mail order and conclude a collective agreement on ‘good and healthy working’. The strike call applies to employees in Graben near Augsburg, Leipzig, Koblenz, Rheinberg, Werne and the two locations in Bad Hersfeld.

Union: income too low
Verdi federal board member Stefanie Nutzberger explained that the colleagues who have been fighting for a collective labor agreement at Amazon for years now deserve Verdi’s respect. The union accused Verdi of paying several hundred euros less than comparable collective agreements.

Amazon does not expect any impact on customers from the promotions. A company spokesperson said preparations for the special sale days began weeks ago, when Amazon says it is offering exclusive discounts to customers of its “Prime” service. In light of the Verdi criticism, the company explained that it is important for Amazon to offer all colleagues attractive jobs with good prospects.
