Extra fee planned packages of non-EU countries can become more expensive

Date:

In the future, packages from countries outside the EU can become more expensive. The European Commission is planning an extra compensation for such programs. “We are talking about two euros per package,” said EU trading commissioner Maros Sefcovic on Tuesday in the Internal Market Committee of the European Parliament.

The reimbursement must cover the rising costs against customs due to the large number of orders for cheap online retailers such as Shein or Temu. The EU committee had brought such compensation for the first time in February for the first time. According to the trade commissioner, Brussels now wants to propose a reimbursement of two euros for shipments to private households. For packages on department stores, a delivery of 50 cents must be.

Could bring three billion euros
“We assume that collecting costs for the EU budget can make around three billion euros,” said Sefcovic. As far as online retailers are concerned, he emphasized that the reimbursement must be “paid by the platform”, on which consumers would have ordered. Online retailers can pass on the reimbursement to their customers by increasing prices.

Customs should arrange the deliveries sharder
Brussels refers to tests from consumer organizations, according to which more than 90 percent of platforms such as Shein or Temu are not in accordance with EU rights and contain toxic chemicals. The customs authorities must therefore check deliveries to the EU sharper after the committee has been presented – that costs money.

Commercial Commissioner Sefcovic expects the number of packages from countries outside the EU. “Last year 4.6 billion packages were introduced in the European Union,” he said in the European Parliament on Tuesday. “All songs of recent years we looked at confirmed the upward trend.”

Ongoing research
Investigations are currently investigating against Shein and Temu in Brussels due to possible violations of EU laws in the field of consumer protection and the rules for online platforms. In February, the Consumer Protection Authorities announced, among other things, a sharper approach to Shein. A procedure of the EU committee is already underway against Temu.
