Consumer lawyers submit an official complaint to the EU committee about the hand luggage costs of some airlines. They ask for a uniform regulation in the EU.
There are an extra fee on many flights for hand luggage of a certain size. Consumer protection groups no longer want to accept this. Airlines would exploit their customers with this practice, according to the European Consumer Protection Dachverband Beuc in Brussels.
Affected seven airlines
In particular, the complaint is directed against seven airlines – including Ryanair, EasyJet and Wizz Air. This allows the free part of a small hand luggage piece that usually fits under the chair.
The umbrella organization refers to a judgment of the European Court of Justice in 2014. Accordingly, no extra compensation can be charged for hand luggage, as long as it meets “reasonable requirements” to the size and weight. It is not yet regulated in the EU regulations where this limit is.
From the point of view of proponents of consumers, the limits of the aforementioned airlines are not suitable and therefore illegal. They asked the EU to introduce more precise regulations: it must, for example, be determined to the size of the size of a hand luggage and which services a ticket should record.
