Traders are Temu more expensive for this? EU is planning a surcharge for China packages

Date:

Consumers will be less satisfied, but domestic retailers are very happy: the EU committee is planning a fixed rate extra reimbursement of two euros per package that come to Europe from third countries. This should inhibit the package of flood of Chinese cheap senders such as Temu, Shein or AliExpress.

The European Commission had already brought such a reimbursement into the game in February, now Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic has said concretely. “We are talking about two euros per package that goes to private households,” said Sefcovic on Tuesday in the market committee of the European Parliament. However, when this must apply, it is still open. The reimbursement must cover the rising costs against customs due to the large number of orders for cheap online retailers such as Shein or Temu.

If the packages are delivered to department stores, a delivery of 50 cents must be for them.

More flood is expected
Commercial Commissioner Sefcovic expects the number of packages from countries outside the EU. “Last year, 4.6 billion packages were introduced in the European Union. We looked at all the numbers of recent years confirmed the upward trend.”

The problem is also heated because the United States recently introduced a huge increase in import duties. There you pay $ 100 per package or a surcharge of 54 percent with a value of a maximum of $ 800. That is why Chinese dealers are now pushing more massively to Europe.

With a view to online retailers, Sefcovic emphasized that the reimbursement must be “paid by the platform”, on which consumers would have ordered. Online retailers can also pass on the reimbursement to consumers, making the products more expensive.

Products often do not comply with EU legislation
In its plan, Brussels refers to tests from consumer organizations, according to which more than 90 percent of products from platforms such as Shein or Temu do not meet the EU legislation and contain toxic chemicals. The customs authorities must therefore check the deliveries to the EU sharper after the committee has been presented – this costs money for which the senders must now be requested for the cash register.

The dealers of Austria respond positively
For the trade association of Austria, this is a good step that has long been demanded to reduce the disadvantage of the Interior Businessmen. Orders from third countries with goods value up to 150 euros are probably a duty towards the EU. However, two thirds are declared incorrect to stay under this limit, for example due to partial deliveries or incorrect invoices.

Our dealers now have a damage of 4.5 billion euros, warns against the head of the Trade Association Rainer Will. He therefore calls for the removal of the tax -free limit. In addition, platforms that are not repeatedly on the EU requirements and health-standing ingredients in the products must be completely excluded from the EU market from the EU market. “It is high time that the EU is consistent here,” Harald Gutschi, head of the mail order company Otto Austria (Universal Shipping etc.).
