Employment stands at nearly 20.5 million, the highest figure since 2008, and unemployment falls below three million in the second quarter, according to EPA data
Neither the war nor inflation prevented the Spanish labor market from continuing to create jobs at a good pace, almost as if it were completely oblivious to the current economic uncertainty and as if there had been no pandemic just over two years ago. For example, in the second quarter of the year, a time that was good for the labor market, a total of 383,300 new jobs were created, less than last year, but slightly more than in 2019, before the lockdown broke out. . Employment stands at nearly 20.5 million workers, the highest figure since 2008 and close to the historic high of 2007, according to data from the Active Population Survey (EPA) released Thursday by the INE.
And logically, unemployment has also fallen, albeit in this case by 255,300 people, less than employment – reflecting the sharp increase in the labor force – but more than double what was cut last year. Due to this sharp drop, the unemployment rate has fallen by more than one percentage point (almost three points in the past year), to 12.48%, the lowest level in the last 14 years. It is the first time since 2008 that the number of unemployed has fallen below three million: there are 2,919,400.
For its part, the number of active people has increased by 128,000 people this quarter to 23,387,400. The activity rate rose 22 hundredths and rose to 58.71%. In the past year, the active population has increased by 171,900 people.
In addition, the data shows the positive effects of the labor reform, which came into full effect last April, with more than a million more workers with open-ended contracts in the past year, boosting the creation of open-ended jobs in the last year. quarter has accelerated, with more than 600,000 workers. It should be noted, however, that not all of these permanent jobs will continue beyond the summer, as many of them are intended to meet seasonal needs. Similarly, the vast majority of employment created in the past year has been full-time, with the number of full-time workers increasing by 813,500 and the number of part-time workers decreasing by 17,100.
Employment in the service sector increased by 320,200 in the quarter, in manufacturing by 79,500 and in construction by 21,900, while in agriculture it fell by 38,400. Last year there were 693,300 more employed in services, 111,500 in industry and 13,400 in construction, while the number was 21,700 fewer in agriculture.
