Still expensive – fuel prices finally fall again in Austria

Date:

Fuel has finally become cheaper again since the beginning of July, reports the ÖAMTC. But that is celebrating at a high level, because a liter of petrol or diesel still costs more than two euros. Compared to July a year ago, the price is much more than half higher!

Price reports to E-Control’s official fuel price database show that refueling has become about 15 cents per liter of fuel cheaper since the beginning of July. In July you paid an average of 2,028 euros for a liter of Super and slightly more at 2,031 euros for a liter of diesel. As a result, diesel was even more expensive last month than in the previous record month of June.

Compared to the fuel prices charged by the club in July 2021, there is an increase of about 55 percent for Super at the pumps – for diesel it was even about 64 percent. As a result, in July 2022 you had to pay about 40 euros more for a tank filling of 50 liters than a year ago.

The ÖAMTC still sees the need for politicians to reduce cost pressures and propose, for example, a reduction in the tax on mineral oil. The club also demands an increase in the mileage allowance for those who travel for their employer with their own car. And even if the commuter allowance and the commuter euro have been increased for a limited period, a far-reaching reform towards income-independent and kilometer-accurate reform of commuter traffic is urgently needed.

Holiday countries offer cheaper fuel
Due to price regulation or tax cuts in Italy, Slovenia and Croatia, refueling in these countries is always cheaper than in Austria. So if you’re going south, you’ll need to stop to refuel before returning.

Fuel Saving Tips
Motorists can save money not only when choosing the right gas station, but also while driving, thus saving the environment at the same time. The Yellow Angels advise the following:

  • Check the tire pressure – under-inflation causes the tires to wear out faster and fuel consumption increases.
  • Drive foresight and as consistently as possible – this not only saves fuel, but also makes you safer on the road.
  • Drive in the highest possible gear and avoid unnecessary gear changes.
  • Do not carry unnecessary loads or roof structures.
  • Accelerate only as long as necessary.
  • Use engine braking effect.
