The unions GPA and PRO-GE are calling for an increase in the kilometer allowance from the current 42 to 60 cents. There has been no adjustment to inflation for 14 years, argues GPA Chair Barbara Teiber in the Ö1 “Mittagsjournal” on Wednesday. The question is criticized by the Austrian Traffic Club (VCÖ).
In addition to the fuel, the applicable 42 cents would also cover much of a car’s purchase and maintenance costs, according to Michael Schwendinger of the VCÖ – also at Ö1. A raise is a stimulus in the wrong direction.
‘Many people depend on cars’
Teiber sees it differently: “If the official kilometer allowance is increased, employers could also come up with the idea of promoting other things, such as public transport tickets, etc.”, according to the head of the Particuliere Werknemersbond (GPA) in the news. In addition, many people are simply dependent on the car.
“Government must act”
Rainer Wimmer, president of the production union PRO-GE, takes the same line: “Everyone who receives a mileage allowance makes trips on behalf of their employer. However, the wave of inflation in recent months has resulted in enormous additional costs for the affected professions. So the 42 cents is clearly too small. The government must finally act and give up its blocking stance on this matter.”
Wimmer’s appeal to Finance Minister Magnus Brunner (ÖVP): “The increase in the mileage allowance is far too late. Finance Minister, take action and finally increase the mileage allowance to 60 cents!”
