‘The Bard’, from Venice straight to the Oscars

Alejandro González Iñárritu defines in the Lido that his new film is “an emotional representation of a personal memory”

Alejandro González Iñárritu wants the Golden Lion of Venice and he proves it with his new film ‘Bardo’, the new genius of the Mexican director. Three of his last four films have been nominated for an Oscar; ‘Babel’ (2006), ‘Birdman’ (2014) and ‘The Revenant’ (2015) and there’s no reason to think this surreal and autobiographical black comedy isn’t going straight to the awards of the year either.

The day of his birthday was celebrated by Iñarritu with a mass bath in the Italian competition where he presented his first film in seven years, a narration inevitably reminiscent of Cuaron’s ‘Roma’ and which has all the Netflix machinery behind it. “Netflix not only supported me, but also left me alone to film. They have been extremely generous in letting the audience experience this movie in a theater. That’s something that’s very important to me and an exceptional gesture from Netflix to me. I think this is a film that comes with that kind of experience,” the director said, defending that he could see his film in a cinema.

Iñárritu also mentioned the importance of returning to his country for filming. “Going back to Mexico was key. Coming home is like finding a new friend and this film is an emotional portrayal of a personal memory,” explained the director, who left his city 20 years ago to move to Los Angeles.

Recognizing the sin of success, he also discussed the idea that “success poisons,” his father’s phrase, and that appears in the text of the story. “The loss of success intoxicates you and leads to pain if you don’t know how to control or digest it.” And he said that this band was not made with his head, but came from his heart. “It’s been a liberating process, because the interpretation of our memories makes us imagine an event and what I call ‘Bardo’. I did it in a brave way and the hardest thing is to share those memories, when you do it from the heart, which is a very delicate and vulnerable area,” he said.

‘Bardo’ is billed as: “a nostalgic comedy set on an epic personal journey” in which a famous Mexican journalist and documentary filmmaker returns home to work after an existential crisis. The film was written by Iñárritu and his ‘Birdman’ collaborator, Nicolás Giacobone, and stars Daniel Giménez Cacho, Griselda Siciliani, Ximena Lamadrid and Iker Solano. Netflix bought the film in April 2022 and has promised a binary release in theaters and platforms.

“Alejandro is one of the greatest filmmakers today and one of the industry’s pioneers,” said Scott Stuber, Global Head of Film at Netflix. “We’ve developed a release strategy designed to make the film as broad as possible in the culture. We will give movie buffs everywhere the chance to experience the film in theaters ahead of its world premiere on Netflix.”
