Northern Ireland is quickly becoming a crossroads of film and television, putting our country on the map as a hub of skills and talent.
One of NI’s biggest and most anticipated films ever, The Northman, will hit theaters April 15.
Filmed at Belfast Harbor Studios and on location in 2020, The Northman was the first major project to be filmed during the pandemic.
Directed by Robert Eggers, the epic film is a revenge tale set in the late 10th century that follows Prince Hamlet and how far he will go to achieve justice for his murdered father.
Produced by local man Mark Huffham and employing about 439 crew members based in NI, the film is expected to give 33.33 million back to NI’s economy and receive £1.9 million in funding from Northern Ireland Screen.
These are the places where Northern Ireland was depicted in Northern Ireland to take us to the idyllic setting in Viking times:
Clandebuil real estate
The Clandeboye estate, more commonly used to host lavish weddings than a Scandinavian estate, is one of the many large private estates in Northern Ireland still owned by the original family.
The thatched huts and trees used to film the outdoor scenes at The Northman at Co Down Gardens were spotted in August 2020.

The remote Thor performed a beautiful double performance over the Icelandic fjords at beautiful Antrim Beach near Baliscass.
In 2020, the crew filmed scenes seen in a Viking village.
Ariel’s shots of a bull on his head were also used in the filming of The Royal Door Games.
knock Dhu
Knock Dhu, located outside Baligali in Co Antrim, is a Bronze Age fortress and settlement located about one mile west of Keirnkassal.
The site consists of three banks, a moat, Bronze Age round houses, and a presumed door.
Beni River and Min River

The Bann River is the largest in NI and was probably used to depict any linear Viking ship.
Upper Pani rises in the Cumulus Mountains and flows to the northwest, while Lower Pani River flows to the north and carries the waters of Lov Ne along the cholera bed.
The River Maine flows into Antrim Glenn, and flows into Whale and Randalstown before entering Lof Neag.
Haytown career
Haytown Quarry near Maluski, Newtown Abe was also used in the filming of The Northman.
Although the site was ideal for transporting the public back to the 10th century, the quarry has been the subject of controversy over proposals worth 240.240 million rubbish mill for nearly 20 years.
Terela Beach

Tirella Beach and Reserve in Downpatrick is a small gated complex on the Danube River in Dundrum Bay.
It is a flat beach with an area of 25 hectares of sand dunes.
Sandy Bri
The rustic landscape of Sandy Brae in Kilkeel Co Down captures the expansive exterior used in The Northman.
Belfast Harbor Studios

The 8-acre, 340-acre site is one of Belfast’s newest studios.
The studios combine high-quality audio textures, sophisticated arcades, and robust designs with power, lighting and interior settings to suit the full range of filmmaking uses.
