Only the Strong Survive contains 15 soul and rhythm and blues classics

Bruce Springsteen, one of rock’s most respected legends, pays tribute to the musicians who composed the soundtrack of his childhood and youth on his latest album ‘Only the strong survival’. The disc contains fifteen covers of soul and rhythm and blues classics that are part of the traditional American songbook. The new work is related to Springsteen’s tribute to Pete Seeger on the 2006 album We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions.

‘Only the Strong Survive’ collects treasures from the repertoire of labels such as Motown, Stax, Gamble and Huff, black music classics that defined part of the singer’s career. This time The Boss dispenses with The E Street Band, loyal companions in other jobs, and opts for The E Street Horns and other experienced musicians.

Artists featured include Aretha Franklin (“Don’t play that song”), The Four Tops (“When she was my girl” and “Seven rooms of gloom”), Diana Ross & The Supremes (“Someday we ‘ll be together’ ) and The Temptations (‘I wish it would rain’). “I wanted to make an album where he just sang. And what better music to work with than the great American songbook of the sixties and seventies?” says the artist.

In the sessions for this album, he recorded some fifty versions of black music classics, an effort that will not fall on deaf ears, as the Boss has proposed releasing a sequel for a date to be determined.

The guest of honor on this album is Sam Moore, from the famous Sam & Dave, whose voice can be heard on the songs ‘Soul day’ and ‘I forget to be your lover’. The song Bruce chose to name the album, which comes in a free translation to say ‘Only the strong survival’, was a hit Jerry Butler published in 1968 that speaks of the desire to equip himself with a shell to come unharmed from the trance of love.

At times, the album is a sweetly melancholic ode to tempestuous love affairs, like the one in “What Becomes Of The Brokenhearted,” a song Amy Winehouse should have recorded before she died and which Springsteen sings in the version Dave Stewart did. in 1980.

At the age of 73, the New Jersey man can boast of knowing how to captivate audiences with a voice that stands out for its softness and good inflection. It even enables treble scaling in songs like Phil Collins’ “I Wish It Would Rain.” A not inconsiderable achievement for a recurring depressive who underwent spinal surgery, a condition that nearly ended his career.

‘Only the strong survive’ has already been released on double vinyl, orange double vinyl, CD and digital. It is likely that some of their songs will be played on Bruce Springsteen’s European tour next year, which will start in Spain, with a double date on April 28 and 30, 2023 at the Olympic Stadium in Barcelona.
