Ethan Coen is also preparing a solo film

Date:

After Joel Coen made his solo directorial debut with ‘Macbeth’, Ethan is now preparing a comedy inspired by Russ Meyer productions

Well yes. The divorce of the Coen brothers seems to be final. After Joel Coen made his debut as a solo director, without his brother’s involvement, with ‘Macbeth’ where Ethan was not involved in the production or script, it is now Ethan who announces that he is also preparing a solo film.

When Joel premiered ‘Macbeth’, it was said that Ethan had lost his interest in cinema. Apparently he lied to us like villains. The Coen brothers, geniuses with titles like ‘Fargo’, ‘The Big Lebowski’ or ‘No Country for Old Men’, have ended their partnership and the state of the relationship between the two has yet to be clarified.

The film that Ethan Coen is preparing is billed as a sexual comedy inspired by Russ Meyer, the American filmmaker specializing in voluptuous women with huge breasts who is already a cult filmmaker.

Focus Features and Working Title are the production companies behind Ethan to develop this untitled film that the filmmaker wrote in 2000 with his wife Tricia Cooke. So the idea was that the film would be directed by Allison Anders, a director who triumphed in the indie atmosphere in 1992 with ‘Service Area’. The project was never given a title (it doesn’t have one today, waiting for it to materialize), but the script was so striking that names like Selma Blair, Holly Hunter, Christina Applegate, or Chloë Sevigny were considered protagonists.

It is known that that script by Ethan Coen and Tricia Cooke wrote more than 20 years ago, it was a road movie with lesbians whose biggest reference was Russ Meyer, the famous ‘sexploitation’ director of the 70s, with hundreds of films to his credit characterized by low budget, eroticism and hilarious humor, including those considered cult myths today such as ‘Vixen’, ‘Supervixens’, ‘Up’ or ‘Beyond the valley of the ultravixens’. In the early 1980s, Russ Meyer (March 1922 – September 2004) was a well-known filmmaker in Spain, as some of his titles had their commercial premieres with us and there was no festival that did not offer a retrospective of his filmography, with Meyer present to the delight of the spectators.

Ethan Coen’s project is touched by the most incorrect sexual humor. Attempting to describe it in 2007, the filmmaker noted that “its sensibility is an exploit, but with a greater innocence.” Overall, this “sex comedy” tells of a party girl traveling with a half-drunk boyfriend from Philadelphia to Miami and encountering a thousand and one adventures.

It is known that a severed head, an embittered ex-girlfriend, a mysterious suitcase and an evil senator will be elements in the film. The film is still in a very early stage of production, but surprisingly, after separating after shooting ‘The Ballad of Buster Scruggs’ in 2018, a film they made for Netflix, Joel, has the ‘serious’ brother Shakespeare. adapted while Ethan, the ‘nice’ brother prefers to pay tribute to Russ Meyer.
