The actress presents her production company and her second job with Arnaud Desplechin in Cannes, but announces that she will delay her work as an interpreter

Halfway through the Cannes festival, Marion Cotillard presented ‘Frère et sour’ out of competition. In Arnaud Desplechin’s film, French actress plays Alice, a woman in her 50s who is in crisis and hates her brother half her life. “During filming, I was forced to distance myself from Melvin Poupaud, who plays my brother in fiction, so that the fraternal struggle was palpable on screen. I wish there was no familiarity between us,” Cotillard said yesterday. “I didn’t explain my decision to Melvin until after the shooting was over. It was a real necessity for me to maintain an opposing magnetic field between us.”

Cotillard, whose mother was a victim of gender violence, admitted with a smile that she felt relieved at the end of the film. “It was a pause to explain to Melvin why he had taken so much distance. He understood very well.” It is the second time that the French star has been led by Desplechin, with whom she collaborated on ‘Les Fantômes d’Ismaël’ five years ago.

In reality, Cotillard introduced the media to Newtopia, the production company he co-founded with director Cyril Dion and activist Magali Payen. “We want to tell ambitious stories that depict a sustainable world,” said the actress, who promoted the documentary ‘Flore Vasseur’ at Cannes last year. “To create the world of the future, we need the imagination of today. Newtopia wants to bring this new imagination to life on screen.”

His projects include Cyril Dion’s first fiction film, ‘Le Grand Vertige’, an adaptation of Pierre Ducrozet’s novel, as well as a series devoted to Florence d’Eaubonne, a pioneering ecofeminist writer and activist.

He also spoke about success and how he plans to slow down his work pace. At the age of 46, she confessed her joy at the invitation to the Croisette, but revealed that the cinema will have to get used to her desire to stop acting. “My family is my career,” said the actress, who has two children with actor and director Guillaume Canet. But his intention is not to disappear completely, but to walk at a more leisurely pace.

«When making the documentary ‘Flore Vasseur’ last year, I found my place. I like to give people who don’t have a voice the chance to express themselves and guarantee the authenticity of their project. I want to focus on this aspect of creation. I will continue acting, I will not retire, but not at the same pace,” said Cotillard.

Ready to change the world from the big screen, she admitted that she was very proud of this adventure. “Newtopia was born with the goal of bringing forth a new generation of stories that promote a desirable, environmentally sustainable and socially just future,” concluded the actress.
