The artist Esteban Bernal will create the backdrop for the new edition of Cante de las Minas

Date:

Esteban Bernal Aguirre will once again be behind the scene for the 61st edition of the Festival Internacional del Cante de las Minas, which will measure 12 meters long and 5.5 meters high and may be reused for future editions. This creation will be inaugurated on Tuesday 26 July, before the start of the festival. On this occasion, he has used recyclable materials from all over the world, “a nod to the international character of our festival,” says the artist.

This scenography is a walk through the colors and textures of the Sierra Minera, as the Cante de las Minas Foundation announced yesterday, with special lighting designed to enhance this work that has been two and a half years in the making. In recent months, the details of this collection have been finalized in the facilities of Maquinista de Levante, venue of the 60th edition of the festival and company which shows the most emblematic foundry elements seen in the old public market of La union.

Esteban Bernal Aguirre is one of the great names historically associated with the Festival Internacional del Cante de las Minas as a follower of the legacy of Asensio Sáez, who was also a teacher and inspiration in its artistic facet. The creative power of the native of the Union can already be seen in some of the trophies, as well as in the posters or wallpapers that have illustrated the ‘Catedral del Cante’ in previous editions, without forgetting works such as the Monument to the Miner in Plaza Joaquin Costa. His first set design premiered in 1985, although he has been a constant contributor to the competition since 2000. In 2012, in its 52nd edition, it chose one of the most emblematic icons of La Unión, flooding the stage with 36 works of mining towers. In the next edition, and until 2019, he created a 50 square meter cyclorama with backlighting that changed color, consisting of mining towers that formed a silhouette of the mining landscape.
