Youth, history and conquest of the future

Date:

First Olympiad of the History of the Region of Murcia

The modality of the Olympic Games (mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology, geology, computer science, economics, constitutional, classical languages, geography, philosophy) as a form of education in the region of Murcia has become an evocative, attractive and educational activity in many centers of Secondary education. Scientific and cultural associations and entities related to different fields of knowledge and research, in collaboration with the University of Murcia, have put into practice a mechanism that is an encouragement to students and teachers. Besides being a research and consultation project that completes the training in the classroom and allows the student to open the window of the university world, it also has the merit of involving the families themselves and establishing relationships and contacts about their work with colleagues create. other centers.

Until this course, however, History was absent from this training and education project. It is evident that we have a weak knowledge and thus appreciation and justification of our past and historical, artistic and cultural heritage. Which, however, is both criticized and considered by the citizens in appreciating the transcendental economic and labor role that presupposes the preservation, restoration and enhancement of the historical heritage. The example of Cartagena is telling.

In 2011, the Center for Historical Studies and Local Research of the Region of Murcia, in collaboration with the Molina de Segura City Council and several educational centers, launched the Regional Day of Local History. On June 7 of this year, when he retired in Murcia as a singer-songwriter, Joan Manuel Serrat asked us to renounce any desire to unite in the conquest of the future. And this, I think, is the fundamental goal of the Olympics in history: to let young people conquer their future.

“Every human group asks itself questions about its personality, its present situation and its future. A people without history is like an individual without memory: deprived of part of their personality, they lack the necessary temporary experience to reflect on their current situation (F. Chacón, 1979)».

Fortunately, this situation is overcome. The call for the History Olympics is an example of this. This has been made possible thanks to the participation of several institutions (established by the Murcia Region Center for Historical Studies and Local Research Foundation, in collaboration with the University of Murcia, as well as thanks to the participation of the Regional Assembly, CajaMurcia Foundation, Fundación Pérez-Crespo Payá and the group DICSO: Didactics of Social Sciences, University of Murcia), it has been possible to carry out this exciting and much needed educational training project.

The main objective of the History Olympiad is to contribute to the education of citizens in the knowledge of the past and present within the context of the cultural heritage that has shaped the historical process and formed part of the characteristics of this region. The assessment of the local allows for comparisons between the district, regional, national and international. In this way, and from the knowledge of history, it is possible to discern the characteristics of our collective personality and to root the reflection on the present and the future in the firm foundation of the description and explanation of past and recent events.

Parenting is the most difficult, committed and complex challenge of any society. The step forward that the Olympic Games, and in particular that of History, can represent is the education of critical citizens, educated in democratic and participatory values within the rule of law that ratified the 1978 Constitution.

On June 17, 2022, in a solemn act held in the main meeting room of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Murcia, the Vice-Rector for Students and Employment, Ms. Alicia Rubio, and the Chair of the Center for Historical Studies and Research Foundation Locals, D. Juan Roca, with the help of numerous students, relatives and teachers, presented the prizes won. After a large participation: 128 students from 22 public and concert centers from 13 cities in the region (Alcantarilla, Aguilas, Alquerias, Altorreal-Molina de Segura, Caravaca de la Cruz, Cartagena, Cehegín, Murcia, La Palma-Cartagena, San Pedro del Pinatar, Las Torres de Cotillas, La Unión, Yecla), won the first prize, the student of the CES Samaniego Center (Alcantarilla), Mr. Alvaro Alcaraz López.
