Paola and the famous makeup artist Marcelo Costa

The Northern Irish makeup artist thanked the famous artist for giving him a chance.

Paula Graven, 42, says that famous hair and makeup artist Marcelo Costa met her by chance and invited her to work at New York Fashion Week 2019.

Antrim was a former hairdresser, but her career changed 11 years ago due to health issues.

She has now worked for fashion weeks in London, Milan, Paris and Belfast, in addition to her work at the Los Angeles Film Awards and the Cannes Film Festival.

The artist, who trained with Glow Up Judge Val Garland, has composed Sister Slag, Chaka Khan, and Rada Mitchell in Hollywood.

Paola’s work has now been published in numerous Vogue publications around the world, and was also awarded European Make-up Artist of the Year by Marcello himself.

Most recently, Paula was a “lead artist” on Adnevik’s Compass Rose at London Fashion Week, producing famous models on the catwalk, including Marianne Fonseca, Amelia Gray and Maya Henry.

Although he suffers from several autoimmune conditions including chronic fatigue syndrome (ME), fibromyalgia and Meniere’s disease, he claims to have found a work-life balance.

He says that after his health deteriorated due to “straining” 11 years ago, that dream came true.

The woman from Antrim explained how Marcelo “Inspiration” “changed his life”.

Paula told Be: “The show has received great reviews from Grazia magazine because it is one of the best tricks of the season.

“For some reason we don’t even know how my name got its name [Marcello’s] Mailing list remains a mystery.

“It has always been my dream to go to New York under the age of 40, and ironically, it happened on my 40th birthday.

“I feel lucky, but others tell me ‘Paola, it’s not like that, you have to have faith too. “

“I feel like he was targeted years ago after losing his career due to illness. I thought I was completely wiped out. It was self-confidence.

“Every time Marcelo did his best to help me and give me the opportunities most people dream of.

How many times in life? [would this happen]? It’s wonderful.”

When Paula was a “lead artist” for the first time last month, she was able to bring in two makeup artists from NI: Zoe Foster and Jenny Morrison.

He said, “When it comes to this kind of industry, I feel like I’m getting into it.

“As if you’ve taken my call and always wished you would, it’s a pity that we can’t do that.”

The makeup artist says he never considered going to work for fashion weeks while training.

“In the beginning it was more for rehabilitation reasons.

“I hate to say I’m sick because I like running away to be a pro.

“It’s about knowing your limits and balancing them.

“I have to be realistic too,” Paola added.

The woman from Antrim explained how Marcelo helped him build trust and thanked him.

“When you get sick, you lose a little of yourself.

“I always dreamed of it when I went to New York and I never imagined it would happen.

“I should never have done that.

“The rest is history. I am delighted to have such a great network that will help me achieve these goals so I have something to capture.

“I am currently studying for OCN Level 5 in Hairstyle and Makeup at Belfast Metropolitan College so that one day I can teach at home in Belfast.

“I want to study at home one day because home is my heart. I pray that one day I will get my health back so that I can do it to the fullest.”
