Let’s not lie to ourselves: a harsh winter is coming. Politicians should give the population a clean slate and say so. In this way we can mentally prepare for the end of “normal gas normality”.
Because it’s just unrealistic that our lives can go on as before. We will all feel the effects of the war in Ukraine – in the winter at the latest, when the heating has to come back on and the gas bill flutters into the house. Hence the urgent appeal to our politicians: more honesty, please!
Is the gas supply insured? No more good mood messages!
After all, it is the job of politicians to speak openly about things that are unpleasant or worrying. Good humored messages such as “Gas supply is assured” arouse us Austrians into the completely mistaken belief that there will be no austerity in our lives and in our prosperity and that we will remain comfortably warm. And then comes the rude awakening and nobody wants to know about it!
Warning for a cold winter is healing
Therefore, it is better to speak clearly. When German Economics Minister Robert Habeck clearly warns that the supply situation could become even more precarious and unpleasant and that a new price wave can no longer be averted, it is frightening but beneficial, as is the explanation of the second warning level. Meanwhile, our government politicians are exercising forced optimism. Or they are silent.
Putin threw stardust in our eyes
If we had also taken the situation in this country seriously at an early stage, action might still have been possible. The promise of the Russian autocrat during our Chancellor’s visit to Moscow that he would continue to supply us with gas on agreed terms threw stardust in our eyes and put us at ease. That was a fatal mistake.
Let’s make it clear: winter is getting cold!
Our storage facilities are currently 40 percent full, but how long will that take? After all, the major heating will only start in October and the end of the war is not yet in sight. It’s no longer relaxing and hoping, the pure truth is needed! Who says there: Winter is getting cold, we will have to dress warmly anyway.
