Successor Sachslehner – “Take over ÖVP in no easy situation”

Date:

It’s a change of extremes: from clumsy to bone-dry. From 28 to 62 years. After Laura Sachslehner’s inglorious interlude, Christian Stocker from Wiener Neustadt has to give the general secretary of the ÖVP more political weight and an intellectual level again. He describes himself as a “down-to-earth person who thinks about what he says, but can also show a clear edge,” Stocker said in the “Krone” interview. “I don’t take on the task in an easy situation.” Nor does he call the Tyrolean election result a “judgment result”. Stocker does not appear to have succumbed to the political reflex of money laundering.

The payout of the climate bonus to asylum seekers sparked an escalation that prompted Sachslehner to resign. What is the position of the new ÖVP General on this controversial point? “99.84 percent of the recipients of a climate bonus are not asylum seekers. Only 0.16 percent are asylum seekers,” Stocker analyzes. The minimal share does not justify the excitement for him.

Thomas Schmid lacked the necessary tools
It is striking that in the first background conversations, Stocker clearly distanced himself from chats and ex-Secretary General Thomas Schmid. He lacked the necessary “tools for the position”. “Some of the chats I’ve read shouldn’t be written that way in terms of tonality and intent if you’re in the position of secretary general. Because you’d never say something like that. Perhaps that’s the problem with the Twitter generation, that some things are easier to write than to say.”

“The WKStA has developed a life of its own”
When it comes to chats, it’s not far to the Economic and Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (WKStA for short). It is not surprising for a turquoise, Stocker pinpoints many shortcomings. The agency has “developed a life of its own,” he criticizes. What exactly does he mean by this accusation? “You get the impression that not everything is there as you would like it to be.” None of the authorities could answer the simple question in the inquiry committee, how many suspects are now in the Casinos Austria file. “Who can do that then?” he asks.

Stocker finds studies lasting more than ten years ‘unreasonable’. Three years is a period in which the public prosecutor must clarify the truth of the suspicion in routine cases or whether the suspicion is discontinued, the VP General demands.
