Election campaign on the wholesale market – Van der Bellens “migrant background”

Date:

After a visit to the hip Viennese sausage stall in the smart eighth district, Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen went to a completely different terrain on Monday: together with Mayor Michael Ludwig (SPÖ), the incumbent visited the Vienna wholesale market in Vienna-Inzersdorf, the most important food transfer point. of the country. There, the campaigning president drank Turkish tea and talked about his “migrant background”.

Six days before the elections, one campaign date follows another, but Van der Bellen certainly didn’t get one thing that Monday: tired. This was ensured by liters of strong Turkish tea, which, filled in delicate glasses, was served to the Federal President and his entourage in almost every room on the wholesale market tour. Some 220 companies on an area of 30 hectares trade around 400,000 tons of food from all over the world every year. This year we celebrated our 50th anniversary. Many of the more than 1400 employees have a migration background, they come from 41 different countries.

Surrounded by a fairly right field of candidates, the incumbent also wants to fish in the pool of migrant voters. He himself also has a “migrant background”, added Van der Bellen, he was born in Austria, but not as an Austrian citizen. “Austria is a country of unlimited possibilities”, said Van der Bellen, “one can become Federal President – of course well integrated”.

Van der Bellen: ‘I’ve never been here’
And despite his numerous appointments (election campaign), the Federal President has not seen everything yet: “I have never been here,” reveals Van der Bellen. “You always learn something new.” Besides talking to the businessmen and their families, neither Van der Bellen nor Ludwig could resist some of the tasty morsels. “Very good – it is a shame that we are under such time pressure”, the head of state finally had to think about the next appointments. “Mr. Federal President, that’s why you have such a beautiful figure, because you always need time!” a young man called to 78-year-old Van der Bellen.
