Discuss with us! – Is the next asylum crisis coming?

Date:

As the permanent accommodation is overcrowded, 25 tents have already been set up for the refugees arriving in Austria. But that could be just the beginning. Are we now facing a new asylum crisis? Katia Wagner will talk about this on Wednesday from 8:15 pm with the Lower Austrian provincial council Gottfried Waldhäusl (FPÖ) on krone.tv!

The enormous increase in the number of asylum seekers is causing housing concerns. The fact that the Ministry of the Interior has set up 25 tents for refugees shows that the supply system in Austria is at its limit. And maybe more tents are needed…

More asylum applications soon than in the year of the great refugee crisis?
Because currently about 600 people a day would arrive in Austria. With 56,149 applications for protection in August, we are on our way to a new record, not counting the Ukrainian war refugees. This represents an increase of 195% compared to the previous year. If the numbers remain this high, there would be more asylum applications than in 2015, the year of the great refugee crisis.

Young men traveling alone are accommodated in tents
These figures are also visible in the asylum quarters. The largest refugee center in Traiskirchen (Lower Austria) is now hopelessly overcrowded and the search for new capacity has become difficult, not only due to the shortage of housing. According to Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP), the 25 tents, including in Carinthia and Upper Austria, are mainly intended to prevent homelessness. Especially young men traveling alone should be accommodated there.

NGOs demand accelerated asylum procedures
Klaus Schwertner, the director of Caritas Vienna, sees a “federal solidarity crisis and not a refugee crisis”. It is “incomprehensible” why tents for asylum seekers are needed in a country like Austria. To solve the acute supply crisis, the ten NGO associations are advocating, among other things, accelerated procedures for people with a high chance of recognition, namely refugees from Syria and Afghanistan.
