Fixed special session – Schmid confession: Opposition sees government at the end

Date:

The statements of ex-ÖBAG boss Thomas Schmid against former chancellor Sebastian Kurz (ÖVP), which were announced on Tuesday, lead to a special session of the National Council. After a corresponding push from the FPÖ, the SPÖ was supported on Thursday evening by club president Pamela Rendi-Wagner: “If not now, when”, she said in “ZiB 2”. The NEOS are calling for new elections. Rendi-Wagner also sees the government paralyzed.

A new election would be the only way, NEOS boss Beate Meinl-Reisinger said. The ÖVP has “cheated, lied and bought” an election. She accused the Greens of playing a “double game” – although they “flexed their muscles a bit”, they still remain in coalition with the ÖVP.

Meinl-Reisinger: Subcommittee findings “clearly confirmed”
With the admission of former Secretary-General of the Treasury Department, Schmid, the findings of the U committee would be “clearly confirmed,” Meinl-Reisinger said. Independent courts should decide which statements are credible, the NEOS boss told ex-ÖVP boss Kurz, who is questioning Schmid’s credibility with his lawyer.

Rendi-Wagner: Sobotka damages the reputation of the office
Rendi-Wagner called on National Council President Wolfgang Sobotka (ÖVP), who is also subject to serious corruption charges, to resign. He is doing the parliament and the second highest office of the state a good service and must draw the consequences. Sobotka damages the reputation of the office. The SPÖ leader also sees the government at the end, the ÖVP is in a constant defensive battle: “Of course that also paralyzes the work and the ability to act of the government.”

Kickl: “Lift all ‘corpses’ from the turquoise-black cellar”
The now apparently impending special session of the National Council had initially demanded FPÖ leader Herbert Kickl on Thursday. “Corruption, kindness, job scams – it’s time for the Kurz era to be worked up and finally ended in every way,” he explained in a broadcast: “But for this all ‘corpses’ must be lifted out of the turquoise-black basement Dealing with criminal law relevance is a matter for the judiciary, but as parliamentarians we cannot just go back to normalcy.”
