The red-white-red veto threat against Croatia’s entry into the Schengen area is now finally off the table. “We will support Croatia’s path to the Schengen area, and at the same time we will be very critical of Bulgaria’s and Romania’s efforts,” Nehammer clarified Wednesday after talks with his Croatian counterpart Andrej Plenkovic in Zagreb.
No “bad blood” or “cool mood” was felt during Nehammer’s visit to Zagreb. After Interior Minister Gerhard Karner threatened to veto Schengen entry, Nehammer was quick to rekindle his “old friendship” with Croatia. After an intensive meeting in the Croatian metropolis, it was emphasized that we are on the same side, especially when it comes to the migration issue.
Croatia has “a lot of understanding for Austria”
Prime Minister Plenkovic also promised support against the hesitant forces in Brussels: “We have a great deal of understanding for the situation in Austria. After accession, we will also formulate joint measures for the EU Commission,” said the conservative politician.
In return, the Chancellor now – together with the Czech Presidency of the EU Council, the solution was agreed by surprise attack through separate votes – secured his approval. For Bulgaria and Romania, however, a “no” comes from Vienna: “We see very clearly that these countries still have to catch up”, Nehammer emphasized.
Nehammer visits liquefied gas terminal
Nehammer also met in Zagreb for talks with President Zoran Milanovic and Speaker of Parliament Gordan Jandrokovic. On Thursday he will talk with Plenkovic and Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder about the gas supply at the liquid gas terminal on the island of Krk.
