The Interior Minister of the Government of Spain, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, returned yesterday to defend in Congress that the actions of the Guardia Civil at the Melilla fence on June 24, when at least 23 migrants died, “proportionately and reaffirmed that there was no “regret for any loss of life on national territory”.

Asked about the tragedy in Melilla, without saying that Grande-Marlaska is lying, Aitor Esteban has acknowledged that the minister is not telling the truth. In an interview for Euskadi Irratia’s “Faktoria” program, the PNV spokesman in the Congress of Deputies pointed out that the minister is “very doubtful, in a very bad situation” and gave as an example that yesterday in Congress no member of the government will accompany him. He has also pointed out the need to create a commission of inquiry into the Melilla tragedy.

With regard to the law “only yes is yes”, he stated that we have to wait and see whether the Supreme Court sets criteria or not. If the interpretation is too broad, it should be adjusted, he says. In any case, he wanted to make it clear that the “loopholes” left by the law must be closed by the Supreme Court.
