Johanna Mikl-Leitner puts pressure on the government again. All six ÖVP governors are calling for an energy protection umbrella for work and the economy. The reason is the German measure to introduce a gas price brake. “Our companies compete directly with the German economy. That is why we urgently need to come forward now,” said Mikl-Leitner. There must be a plan before Christmas. But ÖVP Finance Minister Magnus Brunner is deaf.

On Monday, the six ÖVP governors will receive a letter from SPÖ leader Pamela Rendi-Wagner. This offers cooperation in Parliament. In the letter, Rendi-Wagner specifically proposes: “Assess your influence as leader of the ÖVP state party – and influence the ÖVP MPs in your state so that a decision on the gas price cap that is so urgently needed is possible. The Social Democratic parliamentary party will submit a motion for this.”
Giving up party discipline would break a taboo, but at least it’s an original offer.
