Six weeks before the state elections, state governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner (ÖVP) is under fire. Thus, the ORF state studio should be run in the spirit of the People’s Party.
Chats and emails put the ÖVP under pressure again. Six weeks before the state elections, the governor of Lower Austria, Johanna Mikl-Leitner, met it. Several newspapers published news that should show the influence of ORF state director Robert Ziegler on the editorial work in favor of the ÖVP.
Additional TV presence for Mikl-Leitner?
Ziegler is said to have supported Mikl-Leitner’s TV presence and conducted some kind of message control in favor of the People’s Party. The state director denies the allegations. However, the political competition is only too happy to pick this up.
SPÖ calls for the resignation of the governor
SPÖ state party leader Franz Schnabl even calls for Mikl-Leitner to resign. “Out of democratic political responsibility and in the interest of press freedom,” he says.
With its absolute majority in seats, the ÖVP is the main target of all other parties. They sense an opportunity to weaken the mighty governor. Polls predict bitter losses for the ÖVP, which gained nearly 50 percent in 2018. However, the People’s Party remains number one and will find a government partner without difficulty. Both SPÖ and FPÖ, with whom Mikl-Leitner currently has a working contract, are guaranteed to reapply.
