India is ready to take back illegal immigrants from Austria. Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg and his Indian counterpart Subrahmanyam Jaishankar signed a corresponding agreement on Monday.
Last year, more than 18,000 people from India entered the country with virtually no chance of asylum. The “Migration and Mobility Partnership” agreement provides for rapid repatriation. At the same time, it creates opportunities to bring highly educated Indian workers to Austria with the Red-White-Red card. 800 units per year are planned for this. In addition, young people in particular should be given more opportunities with a student exchange and a new working holiday programme.
Austria has “no problem with controlled migration”
The agreement that has now been reached is of strategic importance to Austria, Schallenberg said. “We need India as a friend and partner.” Austria has no problem with controlled migration, only with illegal immigration. Numerous Indian citizens had illegally entered Austria through Serbia in recent months. The Serbian government had suspended the visa requirement, but has since changed this.
Jaishankar said at the meeting that India wants fair and equal opportunities when it comes to legal migration. Austria could play a role in the digital and green modernization of the Indian economy. More than 150 domestic companies are represented in India. The trade turnover between the two countries is about 2.5 billion dollars (converted 2.34 billion euros).
Probably not in force until 2024
The “Migration and Mobility Partnership” is yet to be signed in both India and Austria. That will probably not be until early 2024. The agreement can then enter into force a few weeks later.
