After the great anger in Romania over Austria’s veto against the extension of the Schengen border, the Romanian ambassador Emil Hurezeanu now returns to his post in Vienna. It was a “gesture of opening”, as the president’s office in Bucharest said on Thursday – the country hopes to join Schengen in 2023.
The Romanian president’s cabinet said it intended to send a signal to Austria that a “dynamic dialogue on all available channels” can still be conducted. Following Vienna’s veto of Romania’s Schengen membership, Hurezeanu was sent to Bucharest for consultations.
Hope for a constructive solution
According to the cabinet of the Romanian president, the decision was taken after President Klaus Johannis and Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen exchanged views on Thursday about the right of veto against the admission of the EU member state to the border-free Schengen area.
Following the call, Romania’s head of state decided to send Ambassador Hurezeanu back to Vienna to promote dialogue and find constructive solutions together, according to a press release from the president’s office.
Deduction should clarify position
Ambassador Hurezeanu was recalled to his home country for consultations in early December, a day after Austria vetoed Romania’s and Bulgaria’s accession to the Schengen – according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Bucharest at the time, to assess Romania’s position in relation to the “absolutely disapprove” of Austria’s position.
