The teachers of Salzburg are at the limit of their strength. They have been hoping for quick support and solutions from education policy for some time.
The teacher shortage in Salzburg continues to increase. Demographic changes, longer training times and the wave of retirements are increasing the pressure on teachers. And so also the 73,750 students in Salzburg. Despite solutions that the state and federal governments have been pushing for months – such as shorter training times, career switches and incentives for students and retirees – the situation has not improved for months.
80 vacancies
More than 80 vacancies are currently open in Salzburg. “The shortage of skilled workers has reached the schools,” said Daniela Gutchi, state council for education. She wants to take measures in the short and long term.
“The measures that Ms. Gutchi is proposing are great, but they have to come. We need help now and not in years to come,” criticizes Christine Haslauer, personnel representative for compulsory education teachers.
Gutchi wants to motivate teachers to take more classes. Haslauer sees this as the wrong approach. “Teaching is exhausting, especially now. And if you’re not feeling well and you’re exhausted, you can’t work hours,” says Haslauer.
Representatives have been calling for stimulus measures for years
Gutchi would like to introduce a discounted annual public transport card as an incentive for teachers and to waive any tuition fees for students who are already teaching. “We’ve been asking for that for years. Why wasn’t that possible last year?” asks Haslauer.”Maybe because of the upcoming election,” she adds.
