Burning posters – state elections in Carinthia: now it gets dirty

Date:

Burning posters and wild rumors: The nerves of all Carinthian parties are tense for the state elections. It’s time for March 5 to arrive. Friday 24 February is primary election day and at least one polling station is open in every municipality.

Now it gets dirty. Nine days before the election, posters are burning, rumors are flying and the internet is becoming an arena for abhorrent events. But (un)nice in order and individually:

Destroyed election posters
There have always been smeared posters, usually as a sign of the perpetrators’ lack of understanding of democracy. Flaming posters are new. That happened in the municipality of Moosburg, where billboards for ÖVP top candidate Martin Gruber went up in flames. He is shocked: “Dastardly destruction has no place in a democratic election campaign. Let’s not let anger mongers divide our country!”

Team Carinthia targeted by SPÖ and ÖVP
SPÖ and ÖVP attack Team Carinthia boss Gerhard Köfer, the dispute was started by SP state personnel representative Gernot Nichelwitzer. Nichelwitzer criticized Köfer’s income on Facebook. The TK boss: “Nischelwitzer has been running a smear campaign against me for months. It goes without saying. Why are the SPÖ and ÖVP so nervous?”

Kaiser calls for moderation
Governor Peter Kaiser also plays leading roles in rumours. They establish material ties between Kaiser and the airport’s owner, Franz Peter Orasch. Kaiser’s son Luca is also mentioned in the rumours. In an interview with “Kärnten Unofficial”, the governor switched from campaign mode to official mode. “As governor, I would like to call for respect and moderation. After the elections, we will all have to talk and work together.’ Burnt posters, by which Kaiser refers to the events in Moosburg, are simply ‘outrageous’.

The bottom line: It’s time for elections. Everyone’s nerves are on edge. By the way: you can also vote today on the day of the primaries. At least one polling station must be open in each municipality. However, the opening hours may differ per municipality.
