The government waves its flag – the castle gate lights up in the Ukrainian national colors

Date:

The Austrian federal government sent a sign of solidarity with Ukraine on Friday evening. On the anniversary of the Russian offensive war, the outer castle gate in the federal capital Vienna shines in the Ukrainian national colors.

As a sign of solidarity, the outer castle gate will be painted in the colors of the Ukrainian flag until Saturday morning.

Chancellor Karl Nehammer on the action: “Today is the anniversary of the beginning of the Russian offensive war in Ukraine. The consequences are destruction, suffering, countless civilian casualties and millions of people who have had to leave their homes. Austria is politically neutral but never morally. We stand by Ukraine.”

On Friday, Ukrainian human rights organization Unlimited Democracy also held seven rallies in Vienna to protest Russia’s war in Ukraine. “Every rally must show a facet of the war,” said association president Anna Pattermann about the day of action.

“Many Ukrainians have worked for a house or an apartment all their lives and had to leave their house from one moment to the next,” explains Pattermann. According to the Kyiv School of Economics, war damage will reach $140 billion by December 2022. 150,000 residential buildings were destroyed.
