What do Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and FPÖ leader Herbert Kickl have in common? Both have long called for the lifting of sanctions against Russia and for peace talks rather than continuing arms shipments. Now the two have reaffirmed these demands at a meeting in Budapest.
“We agreed: in view of the war between Russia and Ukraine, a ceasefire and peace talks are needed immediately, as the risk of further escalation is constantly increasing,” Kickl said on his Facebook page after the conversation. The sanctions have led to unprecedented price increases across Europe, the FPÖ leader stressed. “In the event of peace and the lifting of these unnecessary sanctions, inflation would also drop immediately,” said Kickl, who was accompanied by Salzburg FPÖ leader Marlene Svazek and FPÖ Secretary General Christian Hafenecker, chairman of the Austrian Hungarian parliamentary friendship group.
Kickl also praised the Hungarian government’s approach to the fight against illegal migration as exemplary. “The EU must finally get to work and take appropriate measures to protect the EU’s external borders. This includes funding for the construction of border fences,” the FPÖ leader stressed.
Orban: Hungary is a victim of the war
Hungary, which borders Ukraine, tries to stay out of the war in Ukraine as much as possible. His country would be one of the victims of the war because hundreds of members of the Hungarian minority in Ukraine would die. Orban emphasized a few weeks ago that Brussels, Kiev and Washington should recognize this. The government in Budapest has repeatedly complained that the rights of the Hungarian-speaking minority in Ukraine are being grossly violated – not just since the outbreak of war against Russia.
