Missing doctors – reserving study places ‘does not solve the problem’

Date:

Minister Johannes Rauch (Greens) wants to reserve study places for “system administrators”. At the Medical University of Innsbruck, on the other hand, people are skeptical. The state of Tyrol takes a different approach with a national doctor’s fair.

During his visit to Tyrol, Health Minister Johannes Rauch recently shook people up. He can imagine reserving a certain number of places for those who later commit to work in the public system. This should help against the growing gap between panel doctors and hospital doctors. In the previous year, the possibility was created to occupy study places. The military uses them as part of a performance agreement with Med-Uni Vienna.

Theoretically, such an agreement would also be possible with the Medical University of Innsbruck. “But that is not currently planned,” explains Vice Rector Wolfgang Prodinger. The process is complicated and the benefits questionable, Prodinger says. “This idea does not solve the medical problem”, he is convinced, especially since only a maximum of five percent of study places – 15 to 20 places in Tyrol – can be reserved in the “public interest”. The vice-rector also points out that specifying a specific field of work at the start of your studies can be problematic: “What does that mean legally if graduates don’t want to work here anyway?”

Linking education and work is not a new idea. The range of supporters ranges from Burgenland’s LH Hans Peter Doskosil to ÖGK official Andreas Huss. The health of Tyrol LR Cornelia Hagele (ÖVP) refers to the Tyrolean variant to provoke young doctors. As reported, the new state government has created nationwide doctor’s scholarships. The first tender has just started. A maximum of ten scholarships are awarded to students who subsequently reside in Tyrol for at least five years. You will see in a few years whether this remedy works.

However, Vice Rector Prodinger sees the greatest effect if recruitment is done elsewhere: “When young doctors enter the practice, they are happy with all the support. You can pick them up there.”
