The Gag Act remains in force after its reform was rejected by votes against from EH Bildu and ERC

Date:

EH Bildu and ERC spokespersons have explained that “it is prohibitively expensive to vote in favor of a law that upholds articles about disobedience, disrespect for authority, the use of rubber balls and hot returns.”

The reform of the Citizen Security Law, known as the Gag Law, did not pass in Congress because it did not receive the support of the majority of the Interior Committee, which ERC and EH Bildu voted against. Therefore, the current rule remains in effect as it was.

The 18 votes of PSOE, Unidas Podemos and PNV were not enough to implement the reform opinion and therefore to send it in full, as ERC and EH Bildu added their two nos to the 17 of the bloc of deputies of the PP, Vox, Ciudadanos, UPN (Mixed Group) and Junts (Plural Group), a party that participated in the negotiations but announced weeks ago that it would vote against.

In this way, the reform of the Gag law is again frustrated – that already happened in 2019 because of the call for elections – although this time the agreement was not possible because the government and its investiture partners failed to reach a consensus on the four points that have marked the discrepancies from the start: riot gear, disrespect for authority, disobedience and defiance, and hot return.
