Irregular migration – further controls at the German-Austrian border

Date:

Germany extends border controls with Austria for another six months. The reason for this is the “highest level of irregular migration detected”, according to the neighboring country’s interior ministry.

Germany was again the top destination in Europe last year, Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said. In 2022, 217,735 asylum applications were submitted, a quarter of the number in the EU. “It is worrying that in 2022 irregular migration at the EU’s external borders was the highest since 2016.” The housing situation in German states and municipalities is said to have deteriorated.

No decline in numbers in sight
She also does not expect a “sustainable decrease in irregular migration to Central and Western Europe”. The politician is therefore forced to order internal border controls on the main route to Germany for another six months. The extension will take effect from May 12. Austrian Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) had previously announced that border controls would be extended to Slovenia and Hungary.

Meanwhile, Denmark plans to end border controls with Sweden on May 12. Those to Germany remain intact, but have been reduced, according to the newspaper. Sweden was about fighting cross-border gang crime and bombings. Germany is also about crime, so commuters and holidaymakers should now be less controlled.

Actually, there are no stationary identity checks at the borders in the Schengen area, which includes 26 European countries. However, in recent years several states have made an exception and in some cases reintroduced controls.
