The result of a state election in Salzburg has not been as exciting and unpredictable as this one for a long time. What unites the parties and what divides them will ultimately determine the formation of a government as much as the will of the electorate. It should already be certain that the ÖVP will return to first place. But who else dates a government? A coalition with the FPÖ will be a crucial issue for Wilfried Haslauer. But its options are limited.
Even before the election, Marlene Svazek is almost certain to be the winner. The FPÖ is the only party rising in the polls and is likely to become so strong that the ÖVP can barely get past it. The mediocre performance of the SPÖ candidate David Egger also contributes to this. In the many discussions about the federal party presidency, he finds it difficult to concentrate on Salzburg. The newcomer can only hope that the latest polls are wrong.
Is the Dirndl Coalition Out of Fashion?
The Greens and Neos actually want to continue the so-called Dirndl coalition with the ÖVP. It is more than a question of whether this is still mathematically possible. The Greens have not yet been able to set up a single wind turbine in Salzburg. The promise is that Berthold should do more when it comes to climate protection. But do voters still have confidence? Neos candidate Andrea Klambauer never tires of highlighting her successes in housing and education. The other parties see it differently. Also the inhabitants of Salzburg?
KPÖ Plus before jumping into the state parliament
The small parties say that the KPÖ Plus, with Kay-Michael Dankl at the top, has a chance to get into the state government. The sympathetic communist is already on the city council of the city of Salzburg and has announced that he wants to become Haslauer’s biggest pain in the neck.
The protest party MFG and its spin-off WIRS steal votes from each other. The corona pandemic is no longer the dominant topic. A move to the state parliament is considered unlikely.
