After the state elections in Carinthia and Lower Austria, the share of women in the state parliaments has noticeably shrunk. The president of the Styrian parliament describes this as a “step backwards”. Does the scenario also threaten in the Landstube in Graz?
Women have been allowed to vote and be elected in Austria since 1919. But even 104 years later, Austrian women do not hold nearly as many political offices as their fellow male citizens. Before the last elections in Lower Austria, 29 percent of the state parliament was female. Now it is only 23 percent. But the situation in Carinthia is more bleak. Even before the election, the share of women was low at 22 percent – now it’s just under 17 percent.
