According to Chancellor Karl Nehammer, “protective measures” have also been taken in Austria because of the attempted coup in Russia, Interior Minister Gerhard Karner has not ruled out a possible grant of asylum to mercenary boss Yevgeny Prigozhin.
The criminal investigation against Prigozhin following his actions against the Russian military leadership is still ongoing. The 62-year-old may have gone into exile after his fighters retreated to neighboring Belarus. But since Saturday night there is no trace of him.
Karner stressed on Monday that events such as those over the weekend Russia “also always have an impact on internal security”. “Immediately after the Wagner Group became aware of these events, the state security reacted and issued orders to also expand police operations in some areas,” said the interior minister. For reasons of police tactics, he “did not want to say where”, but it was about “buildings or people who could be in danger here”.
Karner: Prigozhin would be judged on a case-by-case basis
On the sidelines of a meeting with his Slovak counterpart Ivan Šimko in Vienna, when asked by a journalist about the possibility of asylum for Prigozhin, Karner said: “On the subject of asylum, I would like to refer to what I have said several times in this context: Case-by-case assessments are planned and this is also planned in the future.”
