Up for auction – Extreme racers may lose their cars in the future

Date:

Speeders may lose their car in the future. The companions are then auctioned, with most of the proceeds going to the road safety fund. The ÖVP, Greens and SPÖ voted in favor of this move on Wednesday.

In detail, a three-stage system is envisaged, starting with the provisional seizure of the vehicle. People who drive 60 kilometers per hour too fast in the city and 70 kilometers per hour too fast in the countryside can have their car removed completely in the future. If the speed limit exceeds 80 or 90 km/h, a single violation must, under certain conditions, result in the car being unavailable.

As Transport Minister Leonore Gewessler (Greens) explained, in these cases the vehicles are auctioned. 70 percent of the proceeds go to the road safety fund, the rest to the municipality in question. If the driver does not own the car, he or she will be permanently banned from driving.

“Car Is Not a Toy”
ÖVP traffic spokesman Andreas Ottenschläger said a car is an important means of mobility for many, but “is not a toy on the road”. Withdrawal of the driver’s license would do nothing for extreme speeders, who would continue to drive, said Dietmar Keck of the SPÖ.

Gewessler recalled that such traffic behavior also poses a danger to bystanders. The NEOS and the FPÖ did not agree with the National Council’s plan. For example, they said that the Constitutional Court would not come into play. The Liberals would even like a higher speed limit on the Autobahn. “Cars are neither weapons nor bad and dangerous as such,” said traffic spokesman Gerhard Deimek.
