The ÖVP admits: automatic rent increases will be stopped. In addition, Chancellor Karl Nehammer leaves the door open to the coalition with the FPÖ in the krone.tv summer interview with Katia Wagner (see video above), but without Herbert Kickl.
The ÖVP gives up its resistance to the rent brake demanded by many parties. Chancellor and ÖVP boss Karl Nehammer announced in krone.tv’s summer talk with Katia Wagner that the automatic inflation adjustment of rents would be stopped in 2024. Rent increases of up to 15 percent threaten next year.
“Clear support for tenants”
‘We will not allow that. We are working on clear support for tenants, so that this does not happen at this level,” says Nehammer. He also announced a tightening of competition law in the fight against inflation.
‘Herbert Kickl is not the whole FPÖ’
The ÖVP boss insists he does not want to form a coalition with Herbert Kickl, but he leaves the door to the FPÖ ajar. “I rule out a coalition with Herbert Kickl, but Kickl is not the whole FPÖ”. At the same time, Nehammer denies whether more could have gone further with the FPÖ than with the Greens.
“The Babler proposals are from yesterday”
Nehammer sees the new SPÖ chairman Andreas Babler critically: this must first be found. In any case, his previous proposals were from yesterday.
“I believe in Kurz’s innocence”
Nehammer wants to position himself as an alternative to Babler and Kickl in the chancellor duel. Those who don’t want “the extremists” in leadership positions can choose him as the “responsible” head of government. Nehammer also defended his predecessor Sebastian Kurz in the conversation. “I believe in the innocence of Sebastian Kurz and in the independent judiciary.” He is therefore happy that the process is getting underway. When it comes to climate glue, Nehammer advocates tougher penalties and describes the activists as undemocratic.
