More than 600 dead – Kocher’s trip to Morocco postponed due to earthquake

Date:

Due to the severe earthquake in Morocco with more than 600 deaths, Minister of Labor and Economy Martin Kocher (ÖVP) will not travel to the North African country on Sunday. The three-day visit will be postponed, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Foreign Affairs announced in a statement on Saturday.

“Given this tragic situation,” the economic mission of a delegation around Kocher, scheduled for Sunday to Tuesday, will be postponed, it said. A new date was not announced.

Deepen trade relations
The delegation would consist of representatives of the Chamber of Commerce (WKÖ) and more than twenty Austrian companies. Possible collaborations should be explored in the fields of energy, hydrogen, green technology and in the industrial and automotive sectors. In addition, an agreement must be finalized to improve the framework conditions for Austrian companies in Morocco.

The agenda also included meetings with Moroccan Minister of Economy and Finance Nadia Fettah Alaoui, Minister of Industry and Trade Ryad Mezzour, Minister of Investments Mohcine Jazouli and Minister of Energy Leila Benali. At the same time, Kocher wanted to increase awareness of the Red-White-Red card for recruiting foreign workers as part of the trip. At the end of July 2023, 423 red-white-red cards for Moroccan workers were active in Austria, according to the Ministry of Economy and Labor.
