‘This has more to do with the election campaign than with ethics’

Date:

Asked about his statements about ETA prisoners, he assured that “it is not acceptable” to “suggest” that he has tried to “humiliate or cause suffering” to the victims of terrorism.

The general coordinator of EH BilduArnaldo Otegi, has stated that the criticism he has received for applauding Urdaibai rower Iñaki Goikoetxea, who dedicated his victory in the Bandera de la Concha to the ETA prisoners, “It has more to do with the election campaign than with ethical issues.”

In statements to the SER, Otegi assured that “it is not acceptable” to “suggest” that he has tried to “humiliate or cause suffering” to the victims of terrorism.

Otegi collected the Basque prisoners on the social network.

Otegi wrote a message in which he assured that he is always moved by this rower and thanked him for “always remembering the political prisoners.”

Lehendakari Iñigo Urkullu and other representatives of the PNV, as well as the PSE-EE, PP, Elkarrekin Podemos and victims of terrorism groups have expressed their criticism of Otegi. The Urdaibai club from Bermeo described Goikoetxea’s statements as ‘unfortunate’.

This afternoon, Otegi indicated that last year he posted the same or a similar message on the same social network “and nothing happened, except criticism from Covite and some victims’ associations, with whom I never argue”, but this year they wanted an ‘artificial debate’ generation that, in their opinion, is the result of an attempt to ‘clog’ EH Bildu’s growth. “We are already engaged in the election campaign,” he added, referring to the Basque elections scheduled for 2024.
