After the burglary shock for top politician Karoline Edtstadler, it is now “Commissioner DNA” (more than ten leads are being investigated) in the hunt for the “Kortebroeken gang”.
Three weeks ago, in the middle of her summer holiday on the Mediterranean in Nice, the pearl of the Côte d’Azur, live images from the surveillance cameras of her apartment in Vienna suddenly appeared on the mobile phone of the Minister of the Constitution and Europe. It showed two burglars wearing baseball caps and scarves on their faces loudly breaking down the security door of the top politician in the posh Döbling district.
Virtually no loot
An observant neighbor and the ÖVP frontwoman alerted the police almost at the same time. Heavily armed WEGA troops also rushed to the scene, after which the disturbed duo fled via the balcony on the first floor. During the coup, the two perpetrators, who probably – intentionally or unintentionally – had received inside information from construction workers who had worked there weeks earlier, did not actually steal anything. The only thing missing is some cash.
The detectives of the National Criminal Investigation Department painstakingly secured more than ten promising DNA traces, even though the perpetrators were wearing gloves. The genetic fingerprints are now being evaluated in a laboratory on behalf of the Vienna Public Prosecutor’s Office.
‘Normal’ burglary or a state matter?
The investigators of the Directorate for State Security and Intelligence (DSN) must now determine whether it is just a “normal” coup or even a matter of state. The background to the burglary could also have been to obtain information from the turquoise top politician…
