Tyrolean SPÖ deputy governor Georg Dornauer wants to encourage retirees to work longer as a means to combat labor shortages. This should be achieved through incentives, such as tax exemption, and age-appropriate jobs.
Many sectors are affected by labor shortages. For example, the construction sector and healthcare. Tyrolean tourism is dependent on workers from abroad – also because of de facto full employment. “It is therefore the order of the day to do everything we can to keep older people at work. To achieve this, incentives must be created for longer working hours – even for those who have already retired,” demands SPÖ Tirol boss Georg Dornauer.
Hope for big effects
On the one hand, this finally requires age-appropriate jobs, and on the other hand, rapid measures are needed that make working after retirement financially more attractive. Dornauer envisions tax breaks for those who want to work after retirement for loyalty, physical fitness and social reasons. If just ten percent of older people could be motivated to work longer, “the effects would already be significant in healthcare, health care, retail or gastronomy.”
