On Friday, nearly 400 deputies elected Karl Mahrer with 94.21 percent as chairman of the Viennese People’s Party’s 19th state party. At the 37th conference of the state party, he was promoted to successor to Gernot Blümel, who left all political positions last December.
The new head of the Turkish city party was a police officer and member of the National Council. The 67-year-old has already moved from parliament to city hall and is now not the People’s Party executive councilor. He took over the leadership of the party after Blümel’s departure.
After his freestyle, he thanked the guests attending the Steffl Arena – the former Albert Schultz Hall, which failed to live up to its reputation as an ice hotspot due to a faulty air conditioning system (it’s home to the Vienna capitals, note). He accepts the election with gratitude and humility. He wanted to say to the Viennese: “One thing is certain, we will not let it get us down, we are the Viennese People’s Party.”
