Kritzinger had to leave his South Tyrolean home in 1963 and founded the Tyrolean Senior Citizens’ Association on behalf of Governor Eduard Wallnöfer.

From 1983 to 2018 he was also a member of the Innsbruck city council. From 2002 to 2008 he was a member of the Federal Council in Vienna. The highlight of his political career was the presidency of the Federal Council, which Kritzinger held in the first half of 2008.
