The Public Prosecution Service for Economic and Corruption (WKStA) is fighting the acquittals against former Green politician Christoph Chorherr and others once accused along with him. Canon was accused of abuse of office and bribery. On January 23, all suspects in the case were acquitted.
As the “Standard” reported, the WKStA has filed an appeal for nullity. The other acquittals are therefore legally binding.
This accusation is in the air
Canon was the planning spokesperson for the green city hall group in Vienna until 2019. The former mandator was accused of demanding or accepting payments from co-defendants of well-known real estate companies for a non-profit organization he founded. This supports children’s and school projects in Africa. The donors – including the investor Rene Benko, the industrialist Michael Tojner and the real estate developers Erwin Soravia and Günter Kerbler – are said to have promised themselves benefits in the dedication process in return.
“We acknowledge that an appeal has been lodged”
The WKStA has now filed nullity complaints with the Supreme Court (OGH) in a number of cases. The authority has not named the people involved, but according to ‘Standard’ they are said to be Chorherr, Tojner, Soravia and two other former defendants, as well as fifteen associations. Canon’s lawyer Richard Soyer told the newspaper on Thursday afternoon: “We acknowledge that an appeal has been filed.”
The decisions against which no appeal for nullity has been lodged are therefore legally binding. This includes the acquittals of Benko, Kerbler and Willi Hemetsberger.
