The two parliamentary subcommittees have been established! With the calls in the National Council Plenum on Friday evening, on the last day of the meeting before the Christmas holidays, the U Committee requested by the SPÖ and FPÖ and the U Committee requested by the ÖVP were formally established. Both are scheduled for January 11.
The Rules Committee of the National Council had already approved the two subjects of the investigation on Thursday evening. At 6:04 p.m. or 6:18 p.m., the second President of the National Council, Doris Bures (SPÖ), announced the appointment on Friday on the last day of the meeting before the Christmas holidays.
Tight schedule, broad topics
The opposition parties SPÖ and FPÖ want to scrutinize the financing of the Covid financing agency COFAG with their COFAG committee. The focus should be on the alleged preference for billionaires in Austria by the ruling ÖVP party.
The U-Committee, which is supported only by the People’s Party, is concerned with the “red-blue abuse of power” suspected by the ÖVP. In concrete terms, the government participation of the SPÖ and FPÖ will be examined in the period from January 11, 2007 to January 7, 2020. This should concern possible improper use of government money in departments led by “red” or “blue” ministers. COFAG should also be a topic in this committee.
Last examinations at the end of May
National Council President Wolfgang Sobotka (ÖVP) wants to chair both investigative committees. The sub-meetings are scheduled for January 11 and reporting on July 1. The investigations in the COFAG committee will start on March 6 and 7.
The following week, on March 13, the committee will start discussing the ‘Red-Blue Abuse of Power’. Changes are then made weekly. The last opportunity for surveys is the end of May.
