Interview with Joseba Asiron, Mayor of Pamplona on Radio Euskadi on December 29, 2023

Date:

Joseba Asiron, reappointed Mayor of Pamplona following the motion of censure against Cristina Ibarrola (UPN), reaffirms his three premises for the mandate: respect, calm and coexistence, and confirms that the change in Pamplona has emerged from a shared vision which has emerged and been negotiated in the city itself.

Joseba Asirónmentioned again mayor of Pamplona After the motion of censure against Cristina Ibarrola, he assured that the greatest responsibility of the municipal government is to strengthen “a political mechanism that leaves the right out of the municipal administration for many years, and that progressive governments can be formed to implement progressive policies.” .”

This was stated this morning on the Boulevard de Radio Euskadi, the day after his appointment through the motion of censure agreed by the government. EH Bildu, PSN, Geroa Bai and Contigo-Zurekin Nafarroa.

He confirms this in the years in which these parties find themselves opposition “it was relatively easy to reach an agreement”and that even if the opposition does not govern, at certain times the arm of government can be twisted. He assures that they have had “a good level of cooperation” so far and believes that “the only thing that needs to be done now is to extend those same synergies and dynamics” between the progressive parties.

The new mayor deplored the tension during Thursday’s plenary session: “The level of dialectical tension, apart from the fact that it was very unconstructive, was something unprecedented, it has no explanation in the democratic parameters, which sometimes pushes you up and sometimes goes down. You can’t go into politics. thinking you’re always going to win. He added that he understands the frustration: “I’ve been there and I know you’re suffering and you’re having a hard time. When you have a project and you can’t implement it, it’s hard,” but he assured that there is no room for disqualifications. He has called for tensions to be lowered: “If we really believe that we are here to help citizens, then let’s just do that.”

Joseba Asiron has reasserted himself in the principles for his mandate: respect, calm and coexistence. “Respect, because it is necessary, necessary to live with the neighbor above and below you. Calmness, because the most beautiful word there is, calmness to put things into perspective, to understand the anger of those next to you, who are not in the same situation as you. And coexistence, not only because it has been one of the pillars that has supported my political career, which is very short, but also my entire life and my personal background. They taught me one thing at home that I try to carry as my flag, both when I teach art history at the ikastola and in the mayor’s office.

In this sense, he has emphasized that in a small city like Pamplona, ”where everyone knows each other”, what happened is well known. their position on violence “Not since I became a politician, but since I could use reason.” And he has indicated that his position “has not changed one bit” since, for example, he signed a document condemning the murder of Tomas Caballero.

When asked about the PP’s words about the PSOE and about “giving a mayoralty to Otegi”, Asiron emphasizes that “They didn’t give EH Bildu anything. We have multiplied the number of councilors since we entered the city council.” He added that “in a city like Pamplona, with 16 progressive councilors and 11 from the right, the deviation “was that the right ruled, while the numbers had long been sufficient to form a progressive government.”

About the paradigm shift in most of Pamplona and the PSOE’s relationship with this changeAsiron has assured that EH Bildu did not have to sign anything in Madrid. “The negotiations are based on a shared vision that emerges in Pamplona, by and for Pamplona, negotiated in Pamplona, and which has had nothing to do with Madrid.” Moreover, he recalled that this vision dates back to the last term of office and that it finally took shape after Sánchez’s inauguration. He also does not hide his desire that what is possible in Pamplona is a model that can be exported to the Basque Country: “I would like it to be exportable, I say it clearly.”

Regarding Cristina Ibarrola’s last words at the press conference after the plenary, Asiron does not believe “that Cristina Ibarrola really meant what she said.” I think she is in a moment of anger and great tension and I don’t believe that is the case in any other situation. she would have wanted to say those words, which seem very unfortunate to me,” he says.

From yesterday he is left with the image of a full Town Hall Square, ‘that seemed like a huge blow’ and with other private moments, such as hugs with family and colleagues, but also with the memory of people who ‘were there eight years ago and are there today they are no longer there.
