European Minister Karoline Edtstadler (ÖVP) has now commented on the announced withdrawal of EU Council President Charles Michel. The coming decisions on top jobs in the EU are “a special balancing act”, she said. However, the institutions are strong enough “to solve the (…) personnel problems (…).”
This is “independent of the people who ultimately act.” As reported, EU Council President Charles Michel announced this weekend that he wanted to break new ground. He will lead the list of the liberal Belgian party Mouvement Réformateur (MR) in the elections for the European Parliament on June 9. There is also talk of a possible top candidate for the European liberals, but they will probably find it difficult to remain the third strongest force or defend their position against the right-wing populist parties.
Lack of understanding about job changes
Michel’s announcement caused a stir in Brussels. Many EU diplomats responded with incomprehension. An abrupt withdrawal could see Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán take over the key leadership role, it was said. The Hungarian government already held the presidency of the Council of the EU in the second half of the year. Michel replied that a successor decision could be made in a timely manner.
“The most important task of the President of the European Council is to mediate between the Member States. “Agreing on a personnel package is a special balancing act,” said European Minister Karoline Edtstadler (ÖVP). The European Council’s stability and ability to act must be guaranteed in every situation. “Charles Michel must judge for himself whether it is the right choice to run for the European Parliament, given this responsibility.”
