Erdogan also talks – Nehammer calls Putin in the afternoon

Date:

Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) wants to call Russian President Vladimir Putin in the afternoon. The talks would discuss the possibility of a prisoner exchange and the creation of safe green corridors. It is still important to confront Putin “with the consequences of his war of aggression against Ukraine,” Nehammer said in a broadcast of the Federal Chancellery on Friday.

Nehammer described the military and humanitarian situation in the Donbass and other combat zones as “dramatic”. Both sides suffered heavy daily losses. “On the humanitarian front, Austria is doing everything it can to mitigate the terrible consequences of the war. That is why we will also receive seriously injured civilians, women and children and provide medical care,” the chancellor assured.

It is also important to find a solution to the problem of exporting Ukrainian crops before they rot locally and at the same time famine occurs in many parts of the world. “I support the efforts of UN Secretary-General Guterres here,” Nehammer said.

Already exchanged with Guterres, Erdogan and Zelenskyj
According to official information, Nehammer exchanged views on Thursday with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, and before that with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Prime Minister Denys Schmyhal and the President of the International Red Cross, Peter Maurer. On Friday morning, the Chancellor called Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to discuss the Istanbul peace process and the issue of food security related to the war in Ukraine.

“Today I discussed the talks in Istanbul with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, whom I strongly support going forward,” Nehammer said. This format is the only one in which Ukraine and the Russian Federation have spoken so far. “It is important to me that the two sides do not stop talking about the possibility of a prisoner exchange,” the chancellor stressed. “I raised that in conversation with the Ukrainian president, I will also discuss it with Vladimir Putin.”

The International Red Cross is also committed to ensuring that this happens. “Austria will politically support such an exchange at any time and with all its possibilities,” Nehammer said.
